Large Victorian portrait of a gentleman

This large oil on canvas portrait shows a gentleman in formal clothing, sitting very upright in a red chair, gazing straight ahead. It probably dates to around 1850. The ornate gilt frame is in good condition for its age. There is slight damage to the canvas: a small hole with some paint loss (please refer to images in listing).

N.B. This is one of a pair of portraits. The other (reference MV8023) is of a woman. It’s the same size and in the same frame, so they were most likely of husband and wife.
